What Complications Are Possible for a Senior with Migraines?

Migraines can be a very challenging condition for your elderly parent to experience. Many people assume the only difficulty that comes with migraines is severe headaches. This, however, is not the case. There are complications associated with migraines, as well as efforts to control migraines and their pain, that can impact your parent’s physical health and well-being, but also their mental and emotional health. Understanding these complications enables you to monitor your senior’s health and symptoms so you can ensure they get the care and management that is right for their individual needs.

Some complications your parent might experience as a result of migraines include:

  • Chronic migraine. This condition results in migraine symptoms for more than 15 days each month.
  • Status migrainousus. This condition is characterized by very severe migraines that last for three days or longer each time.
  • Persistent aura without infarction. In some cases, a migraine is prefaced or accompanied by a condition known as aura. This brings with it symptoms such as lines or zigzags in the path of vision, auditory hallucinations, and more. Generally this only lasts for short periods within the attack. In this condition, however, the symptoms can last a week or more after the attack.

Some of the complications your parent might experience as a result of the efforts you use to control their migraines include:

  • Abdominal health problems. Many people take pain medications for their migraines. While these can be beneficial for these headaches, they can lead to other serious problems within the body. Some of these problems include ulcers, abdominal bleeding, abdominal pain, and others. If your parent is taking NSAIDS or ibuprofen, talk to their doctor about this possibility, and ask how to manage it effectively and safely.
  • Medication-overuse head pain. If your parent takes pain relievers more than 10 days out of the month over the course of three months, they are at risk of overuse headaches. These occur when the body stops responding to the use of pain medications by reducing the pain, and instead starts experiencing further headache pain because of it. This can then lead your parent to take more medication, intensifying and perpetuating the cycle. It is important to note this can happen with both prescription and over-the-counter medications.
  • Serotonin syndrome. Some medications and other interventions can cause the body to produce and release an excess of the neurotransmitter serotonin. This can then lead to a very rare, though potentially life-threatening, condition called serotonin syndrome.

Elder care can be a highly beneficial addition to your care routine for your aging parent. As their family caregiver, boosting and protecting their health is one of your top priorities. By including an elderly home care services provider into your care efforts, you can ensure your senior gets everything they need both when you are able to be in the home to fulfill it for them, and when you are not. If they are struggling with a particular health issue such as migraines, this personalized care means your parent can manage their health needs, maintain their independence, and pursue a higher quality of life. Because the care provider’s schedule is completely customizable, you can trust that you will stay as involved in their care as you can, while feeling confident they are receiving the level of care they deserve.
