Starting March 22nd, it’s National Cleaning Week. Now is the time to look at spring cleaning chores and ensuring they get done. Where do you start? You may think of the bathroom as the room with the most germs, but the kitchen sink can give the bathroom a run for its money. These are the areas you need to look at.

Elderly Care in Bellmore NY: National Cleaning Week

The Kitchen

Start with the kitchen sink. Make your cleaner using a mix of distilled water and white vinegar. That will kill germs and not fill the air with chemical cleaners. Scrub the sink with baking soda and sprinkle some baking soda down the drain. Add vinegar and let it fizz. Rinse that out and spray the sink with your vinegar mixture and wipe dry.

Empty the refrigerator. Look at the dates of everything. If it’s nearing date and your mom and dad have hardly touched it, compost it or toss it and recycle the jar or container. Anything that is past date should go. Wipe down all surfaces with the vinegar mixture.

Go through the cupboards and do the same. Wipe the surfaces with vinegar and dispose of items that are past date or haven’t been used. If there are items your parents haven’t opened or used and they’re still within date, donate them to your local food shelf.

Use vinegar to wipe grease and dust off the stove’s hood and any light fixtures. Run the self-cleaning cycle or clean the inside of the stove with lemon juice and baking soda.

Finish up by scrubbing any spills on the floor and vacuuming or sweeping crumbs. Mop the floor with a mixture of bleach and water or vinegar and water.

The Bedroom

With windows shut all winter, dust builds up. Open windows if possible to let fresh air in. Remove all bedding and sprinkle the mattress with baking soda. Let that sit while you wash all of the bedding. You may want to go to a laundromat and put the heavy-duty machines to use. Bring curtains if they’re machine washable.

Run a vacuum through the bedroom if there is carpeting. Shampoo it if you can. If the floors are wood or tile, sweep and mop them with an appropriate cleaner. Vacuum dust webs and wipe the dust off any furnishings.

Before you make the bed, vacuum the baking soda you’d sprinkled on the mattress. You can spray the mattress with lavender oil if your mom and dad like that soothing scent.

The Bathroom

Finish up in the bathroom. Scrub the bathtub with baking soda. If there are mildew stains in the grout, use hydrogen peroxide. Scrub the toilet and toilet tank with baking soda and vinegar. Mop the floor. Finish by using baking soda to clean the sink.

Once the house is clean, talk to your mom and dad about elder care services. Elder care aides stop by as often as you request to help keep the house clean and organized. Make the call to ensure your parents’ home remains clean and clutter-free.
