Now is the time to start preparing the home for fall and winter temperatures and weather. Why now? It’s still warm enough to work outside. It also gives paints and caulking time to cure at the proper temperatures.
Silicone caulking needs to set. If it’s too cold or hot, it won’t cure right, which ruins its protective qualities. Ideally, the temperature needs to be between 40 and 80 F. The same is true of paint. What should be at the top of your list when you’re preparing your parents’ house for another winter?
Seal Windows and Doors
Start outside and seal up any gaps in door and window frames. Add weatherstripping if needed. Check the basement foundation for cracks and seal those up to prevent drafts. For drafty windows, you might want to invest in and install plastic sheeting that blocks out drafts and keeps heat in.
Clean and Test Heating Systems
Get the heating system cleaned and inspected. If there is an air filter on a forced-air system, change that. If there are issues detected, you have time to have them repaired. You don’t want the system leaking carbon monoxide into the air and making your parents sick.
Check Fuel Levels
If your parents use heating fuel like propane, kerosene, or heating oil, check the fuel levels. Make sure they have enough fuel to start the season. If not, call and put in an order to have tanks filled.
Finish Up Gardens
As garden plants wilt and dry up, remove them to compost piles. Turn over the soil, add manure/compost, and lime/other nutrients. Cover all of that in landscaping fabric or layers of wet newspaper to get an early start on planting next spring.
Summer’s dust and pollen have built up. Before windows are closed up for the season, now is a good time to have the carpets steam cleaned. You can open windows to help the carpeting dry faster.
Test Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarms
Go through your parents’ house and test all of the smoke, fire, and carbon monoxide detectors. Look at the date code to make sure the unit isn’t outdated. Test the batteries. Finally, change any detectors or batteries that are not working properly.
